Cycling to Fisterra

Greetings -

. . . from Charles Hansen in Boston as I have just joined the Friends and this list. My girlfriend, myself and another couple will be cycling the Camino from St. Jean Pied de Port in June. We have three weeks in total so plan a relaxed itinerary, with rest days in Burgos, Leon and Santiago, as sell as a weekend in Bilbao before the tour.

I checked the archives for messages on Fisterra, but didn't immediately spot any specifically related to cycling. My basic question is whether it's reasonable to do it in one day each way? We would leave most of our gear in Santiago and I see two likely routes, each about 60 miles. It looks to be a climb out of Santiago, but I'd like to find out how hilly it is riding to Fisterra.

I'd also be interested in cyclist's experiences returning. We're considering the Iberia direct afternoon flight from Santiago to London, probably overnighting near the airport and continuing home in the morning. We understand they give discounts to pilgrims who book locally with a Compostela, but we don't want to take the risk of not booking our flight in advance.

thanks much, Charles
