Hello you all,
The Archdiocese of Santiago has announced that, commencing on June lst,
general visits to the roof of the Cathedral will be possible.
Structural measures to insure the safety of the visitors will have been
completed by then.
The visits will be allowed in groups of 25 people accompanied by a guide that
will refer to the historical and religious connotations of the roof
structures.
The visitors will congregate at the Portico de Gloria and will ascend to the
roof going up a stairway to its left that leads to the Carraca tower. Once
there visitors will traverse to the other side of the Cathedral nave to the
Tower of the Bells. From there, visitors will emerge onto the open roof wherefor
they will be able to gaze upon the Cathedral's cloister, the Platerias Square,
the Literna, the Farrapos Cross, the Girola, the Quintana square, the
Corticela, the Azabacherias Square and the whole of Santiago including Pedroso Mount
from the north side..
By virtue of being a pain-in-the-neckish pushy New Yorker I managed to be
"invited" to the roof of the Cathedral once. Let me tell you: you really,
really, don't want to miss it.
I'm glad that, henceforth, anyone who makes a reservation for the purpose can
partake of the incredible spellbinding insights from the center of whatever
it is that draws us to the Apostle's tomb.
Warm regards,
Rosina
