another of my favourite poems by Leon Felipe translated by me.

Mas sencilla, mas sencilla.
Sin barroquismo,
sin añadidos ni ornamentos,
Que se vean desnudos
los maderos,
desnudos
y decididamente rectos.

«Los brazos en abrazo hacia la Tierra,
el astil disparandose a los cielos.»

Que no haya un solo adorno
que distraiga este gesto,
este equilibrio humano
de los dos mandamientos.
Más sencilla, más sencilla,
hazme una cruz sencilla, carpintero.

Simpler, simpler.
No baroque pattern,
no additions or moldings,
let us see the naked
logs,
naked
and resolutely straight.

"The arms embracing the Earth,
the pole stretching heavenwards,"

No one single adornment
to distract us from this gesture,
this human equilibrium
of the two commandments.
Simpler, simpler,
make me a simpler cross, carpenter.
