The road over the mountain is marvellous, but you're really up there and
weather might change suddenly. I know of friends who found themselves in a
snowstorm at that time
You can get easily lost too if there is a thick fog around. Please do ask
the people in the village about their idea.
The Valcarlos road is really a road for trucks and can be dangerous too.
It's long and winding with at the border into Spain some trails ( see the
book my father my daughter)
I do think you'll always will find a pilgrim to share the crossing!

Personally I would go over!
