Hi season

Tom,

Certainly there was a huge increase in numbers the weekend of June 29/30
last year coinciding with the annual summer break.

In France they have a phenomenon where the whole of the country (or so it
seems) goes on holiday the first weekend of July - 40 kilometre three lane
traffic jams are the norm - and everbody comes back (the rentree) the last
weekend of August.

I remember driving the "wrong" way (ie into Spain) one rentree weekend there
was just me going one way and half of France going home!

Expect September to be much quieter!

My last full Camino was September 2001 which, because of the
difficulty/worry of flying the Atlantic post 11th September, had fewer North
Americans walking and there wasn't much of a problem finding a bed except on
rainy days when people tended to hunker down as soon as possible.

A calendar query. Consensus is that, for walking the Camino,
September is better than August for avoiding crowds in the refugios.
Do the numbers drop off gradually, day by day, as fall approaches, or
is there a special day, or a particular weekend, after which there is
a sudden improvement in ths respect?
In other words, everything else being equal, should we postpone as
long as possible into September, OR can we plan on a specific day?
Thanks!
Tom
