It is ok to buy your phone in the US as long as it is a gsm phone, but in the
long run it is cheaper to buy a Spanish SIM card for your phone rahter than
using your US number.

The agreements are not always what they are cracked up to be.  I used my
italian sim card while on the walk and I had service almost all the time
