You know the saying "there's nothing new under the sun"... Isn't this a
fairly universal phenomenon, at times?  I remember in the 1970s in the west
of Ireland, how you would not know where you were because all the English
signposts were blacked out or removed by those who wanted Irish signs in the
West, the special Irish-speaking area of Ireland.  And people like to make
their mark, as they like to have their say.  Of course it doesn't look
pretty, and it isn't very convenient, but it is perhaps part of democracy!
And part of the thinking of the people whose country you are going through.
