Hello you all,
The pilgrims' office of the Santiago Archdiocese awarded 8,817 Compostelas
last month; that is a 5% increase over the 8,277 pilgrims who received the
Compostela during June last year.
38% of the pilgrims, 3,314 were women and 62%, 5,503 were men.
6,724 pilgrims walked, 2,071 went by bicycle and 22 rode horses.
There were 1,560 pilgrims over the age of 60; 5,482 were between the ages of
30 and 60, and 1,771 were under thirty years of age.
8,247 pilgrims (94%) averred a religious motive for making the pilgrimage and
570 stated a cultural and educational reason.
More than half the pilgrims, 4,927, came from countries other than Spain.
14%, the largest number, came from Germany, and 10% from France (3% were from
Brasil and 3% from the United States).
Almost 91% of the pilgrims followed the French Way with the largest numbers
starting out at SJPP, Roncesvalles, Sarria. Leon and O Cebreiro.
Retired pilgrims composed 19.35% of the total, followed by technical
professionals (computers' people and the like), 14.86%; liberal professionals,
13.44%; students, 11.74%; government employees, 6.52%, and business people,
teachers, writers, housewives and members of religious orders in descending
percentages..
Again, these numbers represent only the pilgrims that received the
Compostela, and not all of the pilgrims.
Warm regards,
Rosina
