Drinking water & camping in the mountains

Water from the fuentes is drinkable.  In those places where it is not, a sign is posted over/near the fountain.

You would be surprised at how much energy you have that first day because of all the excitement.  It's a hard climb but usually not a problem.  There is a gite about 8km up from St Jean that a few people stop at.  Once above the treeline, you are very much exposed.  And getting water would be problem until you reach the French-Spanish border.  Either plan on 27km in 1 day or 8+19km in 2 days.
