airport customs and security

I learned last year that any airport security person seems to have the
authority to take any item he perceives as a possible danger.
I don't know the name of those little aluminum clips, very popular now, that
you can use to hang things on your pack. I gave those up to a nervous
inspector in Paris!
I made it back from Canada with a wooden walking stick, a gift that would
not fit in my luggage. But every single security person told me that the
next person probably would not let it pass.

I think that, if you have any doubt whatsoever, and you actually want to
have the "questionable" item with you, you should put it in the bag you
check.
