I agree with Fr. Gerry. "Americans" has varied meanings depending on who
is using it. Is someone asking my nationality, ethnicity, or the
location of my home?  If I am asked if I am an American (nationality), I
always answer yes. But when asked where I am from (location of my home),
I often take Bob Sprenger's tack - I'll say I'm from California. Most
Europeans seem to know something about California, particularly
Hollywood and movie stars. It's a good conversation starter. Lydia
