I realize that Lonely Planet is not an academically approved reference,
nonetheless it reports that the pile of stones at the Cruz de ferro was
present in Roman times, though I suspect without the cruz.  It is hard
to imagine that following the setting sun during the day or the milky
way at night would not have been a route to capture the human
imagination long before Christianity, especially since the sun then
dies into the ocean in the west where the souls of the dead were
reputed to go...
