Hello you all,
The most prestigious Camino-related prize in Europe awarded to persons
or institutions for Camino efforts, the Elias Valina prize, has been given to
the Santo Domingo de la Calzada Confraternity for the excellence of its
efforts over the years in maintaining the "Casa del Santo en Santo Domingo"
albergue and organizing and sponsoring educational and cultural activities. This
prize, awarded in the past to the notable writer/historian Jesus Jato and to the
Confraternity of Saint James is given by the Galician Xunta and the
International Committee of Santiago Scholars.

The Seventh International Congress of the Associations of Friends of
Santiago will be held in Ponferrada in October of 2005. The Congress meets
every three years and it is expected that 500 to 600 people, from all over the
world, will attend.

The Xunta de Galicia has announced that the one emergency tyelephone
number, accessible for free, will be "112".

Last Wednesday USC (University of Santiago de Compostela) and the
Archbishop announced that the University's Humanities and Medicine students,
that have completed more than 50% of their curricula, will perform as
translators, nurses and cultural guides for pilgrims throughout Galicia next year,
serving in such capacity no less than 120 hours nor more than 500. Their services
will be entirely free although they may earn some academic credits therefor.
The University, the Xunta and the Archbishop also announced the plans for the
"Juvenile Pilgrimage" of 2004 that will bring to Santiago 50,000 (fifty
thousand) youngsters from several European countries. Religious, educational and
cultural activities for such young pilgrims are being organized to take place in
Santiago from the 5th to the 8th of August. (Be warned!).

Warm regards,

Rosina
