Full-journey pilgrims

Dear fellow-peregrinos,

Robert Spenger's recent posting reminded me of a couple of encounters my husband, John, and I had on the Camino last year. We met two pilgrims in May 2001 as we were walking from SJPP to Burgos (we are making our pilgrimage in three stages--we'll do the middle segment this coming May, then the final one in 2003, if all goes as planned). One of the pilgrims that we talked with was a woman who was walking from Santiago back to her home in Holland. The other, a young man from Madrid, had walked to Santiago de Compostela from Madrid through Portugal. We met up with him as he was
continuing his pilgrimage from Santiago on to Italy, and he told us that he planned to walk to Jerusalem from Italy. I do not know if he intended to walk back to Madrid from Jerusalem; it didn't occur to me to ask that question, for some reason.

The joy that Robert mentioned seeing in the returning pilgrims that he encountered was certainly evident in the two that we met, as well.

Ultreia to all!

Another thing is that most modern pilgrims do just a half of a pilgrimage.
Very,
very few carry out the other half, i.e. walking back the way they came. We
are
missing out on a major facet of the pilgrim experience that was probably
just as
important as the journey to Santiago. I talked to only two people who were
returning, and both had a sort of joy about them that was in sharp contrast
to
some of the messages I have read on the list.
regards,

Robert
