Money VS weight

Why do pilgrims carry things with them?

        1) to save money
        2) they might need what they are carry
        3) they do need what they are carry
        4) someone told them they will need what they are carry
        5) so they will have a back up, just in case

I have been thinking, If I start my walk with only take the cloths that
I am wearing, and a pack with a sleeping bag a map and a bank card and a
few incidentals and no more, will that be enough and if I need
something I buy it, in other words throw money at the problem. As an
example, my T-shirt gets dirty instead of using the spare one that I
have been packing or wash the dirty one, I simply discard the old one
and just buy a new one. Does this make sense? Money does not physical
weight, from what I am hearing there are lots of ATM's along the way.
And in this way my pack will weigh under 5 pounds.

Would that be foolhardy or will the Way provide if I have enough money?
