You are right that the renfe website is very unhelpful about the rules on
transporting bikes. I have also heard that the local station officials
arbitrarily decide when bikes can go and when they can't no matter what the
official rules say. The advice I had, and followed, in getting my bike from
Santiago to Irun  in May was that it was easier and faster to take it in a
rental car.
