The Pimsleur method of learning languages has been scientifically developed to take advantage of new research on how people learn. You should be able to buy audiotapes using this method or pick them up at your local public library. I have not tried them myself but they have been generating a lot of positive reviews.

I hiked the Appalachian Trail in 1999 and far from "getting it out of my system", it made me crave that kind of experience all the more. This year I'm planning to hike the Long Trail in Vermont, and then the Camino from Le Puy to Compostella in 2003.

One thing I have to start right away is trying to learn some Spanish - I don't speak a word at the moment. I speak pretty good French and that is one of reasons for wanting to start in Le Puy.
