"If you want to get really far out, consider the magnetic poles of the planet
that suddenly switch charge every several years. I hear its due to switch
again. (and I've never read Shirley)"

I don't know where you got your information but it is not correct. The
magnetic poles of the earth do change polarity but on a time scale of tens of
thousands of years not "every few years" Currently there are no models that
predict the changes so it is impossible to know when they will switch.

The Earth's magnetic pole does wander around the surface of the earth but it
does that very slowly, about .03 degrees/decade. Check any good map and it
will tell you the deviation between magnetic north and true north as well as
its rate of change.
