Pieter Pannevis wrote well of the history. Recently I too researched its
significance, which is extensive and varied throughout the world's cultures,
present and past. Among its many meanings, the scallop shell stands for:

* birth, regeneration and the giving of life

* as a symbol of the extended hand in a gesture of help, mercy, blessing
and healing

* turned upwards, a cup - of goodness and practicality

* as a talisman for protection and the saving of life

* With its ridges all leading to one point, it is a symbol of unity.
This is especially applicable in Spain where there are numerous Caminos
leading to Santiago.
