Be sure to include things as benign as nail clippers in the things checked.
It is amazing what you can no longer carry on board!
I've decided to not try to figure this out and will check the backpack in a box or a "duffle" type bag

  Subject: Backpacks by air

I have been curious about the discussion about how to check a backpack for air travel. Maybe I am missing something but my plan is to carry the backpack on the plane and check a box that contains anything that the airlines don't like on the plane. For example, my walking stick and Swiss Army knife. When I get to Madrid, I will move those things to my pack and throw the box away. On returning, I can find a box that will work the return trip since duct tape will improve most boxes to shipping quality.

Is there something in this plan that I am missing? I have not done this before but I have never traveled with a backpack as small as the one for the Camino.
