In April/May I left my bike locked in public places all along the route with
my gear on it without any trouble. I had a cable lock, nothing super-strong
or heavy, and I didn't even make a point of stringing the lock through both
wheels. I have a nice bike, and it was fine. No one else I ran into had the
least bit of trouble. Tell your friend to remember it's a pilgrimage; it's
okay to trust that things will be okay.
