I think that the author Gary Zukav's belief is that  hatred, envy, religious
zeal, etc., are driven by pain, fear, and desperation and not vice versa.
Therefore one must address pain, fear, and desperation in order to
effectively prevent the destructive things that happen due to hatred, envy
and religious zeal.

As to my own beliefs, make no mistake about it, I believe in justice and
punishing the guilty, but NOT at the cost of more innocent lives.

The motives for the attacks may not be pain, fear and desperation in your
naive view of the events.  Why not hatred, envy and religious zeal as the
motives?
