One thing you might want to do is make sure that your bank has coded your account as necessary for overseas transactions.  I had two cards, and neither worked (both were Cirrus connected) until I e-mailed my wife to find out what was wrong and she had one of the the banks do whatever it had to do to make the card work.

Fortunately, you can, if you have to, live on $15 a day, and I did.
