Thank you for the suggestion on the horseback site Howard. I will try it now.
 You are correct-I did not see the little English "bar" on top.
Also many thanks to those who wrote me about web sites for gaiters.  I am
familiar with the search machines and had already looked them up.  Some
wonderful sites indeed.  The point was, however, I was looking for a local
camping store near me so I could "check out the goods" in person efore
deciding what to get and my usual store "Campmor" seemed not to know of what
I spoke.  I have solved the problem now though.
Pleae don't let that stop all the wondeful people who have written on this
site and privately with invaluable information for me
 As I sit here with a very sore back and neck ( an ongoing problem for me) I
would be thrilled to get any info on a company that might transport back
packs from town to town ( as they do on some walks in France).   I am
determined to do this walk but worried that my back might force me to be
another "didn't quite make it"
