Saint Rocco as a pilgrim

For sometime now I have been intrigued by an image of St. Rocco (San Roque in
Spanish) in my parish. The image has a staff, a gourd, a sac, -the small
dog, of course-, and pilgrim's garb with the Santiago shells on it.
During my recent trip to Rome I made it a point to visit the church of St.
Rocco, (by the Ara Ceoli, next to Augustus tomb), and the images there also
showed St. Rocco in pilgrim's dress with the shells. From what I have read,
St. Rocco's pilgrimage was to Rome from France. Does anyone in this list
know whether he, in fact, made a pilgrimage to Santiago as well?

Warm greetings,

Rosina
