How much should I plan on?

Before Galicia, most of the refugios ask for a fixed amount, often 500 to
1000 ptas. Very poor pilgrims are usually excused from paying. In Galicia
the refugios accept donations but do not have fixed charges.

ATMs are about as numerous in the larger cities (Pamplona, Logrono, Burgos,
etc.) as they are in comparably sized US or European cities. Most of the
ATMs accept most bank cards. The machines are usually present in smaller
cities and towns (Puente la Reina or Astorga, as examples) but a little
harder to find and not always open 24 hours. The smaller towns often do not
have banks and do not therefore have ATMs, so it is best to plan ahead for
several days when passing through a larger city. There is not an ATM in or
near Roncesvalles, so if you are starting in France and get enough pesetas
in France for a couple of days. Many of the cash machines in border areas
allow you to get money in francs or pesetas.
