Again, let me weigh in without giving a specific answer. For info re: St.
Francis in Spain the two best (i.e. most specific) articles are:

Lopez, Atanasio. "Viaje de San Francisco a Espana." Archivo ibero-americano
1.1 (1914): 13-45; 1.2 (1914): 257-89; 1.3 (1914): 369-90; 1.4 (1914):
542-63. "Based on 16th century chronicles, with a none-too-discerning
examination of them, although does offer good bibliography of that period.
Part I deals with St. Francis' arrival in Santiago; Part II his travels
along the road and in Galicia. The last 2 segments continue with the Saint's
travels into Portugal.

Lopez, Atanasio. "Tres santos peregrinos compostelanos en la edad media."
Nuevos estudios critico-historicos acerca de Galicia. Ed. Lino Gomez Canedo.
2 vols. Madrid: CSIC, 1947. 2: 22-8
Investigates the importance of St. James to St. Francis and his followers.
Believes that Bernardo de Quitaval and B. Gil (2 of the original 7 disciples
of St. Francis) were sent to Compostela in pilgrimage during the formative
years of the Franciscan order. Examines the chronology of their visits and
the writings about them.

Note that these are both relatively old and both by the same author, so I
make no claims about their veracity or the worthiness of their scholarship.
