Iodine for Water?

Hi All,

With all of the recent discussions about water issues (to buy or not to
buy, to filter or not to filter) I am wondering if anyone has used iodine
tablets on the trail.  I ask because they are cheap, tremendously
lightweight and from what I understand they work fairly well to handle
common bacterial strains such as giardia.

If anyone has used these or has any comments about their practicality
along El Camino, I would appreciate it.
