For anybody who is on this list but not on stds-754 at ieee.org:

The 754-2008 standard is due to expire in 2018, so an effort is getting
started to clean up its errata and republish it mostly unchanged.
Since there isn't much time before the current
standard would expire, it would be better to determine a set of relatively
non-controversial editorial corrections and clarifications for the 2008
standard. There is already a discussion list from Mike Cowlishaw to start.
Perhaps other interested experts are thinking of such items too.
It might even be possible to move fairly quickly by consensus for the most part.If this third 754 effort works out as outlined above,
no doubt it will be followed sooner or later by another effort
with more ambitious goals and a longer timeline. That's not this project.

If you want to get on stds-754 at ieee.org, it's pretty simple:

 List-Subscribe: <mailto:STDS-754-subscribe-request at LISTSERV.IEEE.ORG>

I will be on vacation until 10 September.
In the meantime, I have set up a doodle poll at

 http://doodle.com/k69s9ssiv9p46dmi

to determine a date/time for a meeting of persons interested in the next
rev of 754. If the PAR has been approved it will be the first official
meeting. If not, it will be an informal gathering of persons
interested in arithmetic
standardization. The agenda will be to remind everybody about IEEE
patent policies (required to be done at every meeting),
determine who might fill various roles: editor, secretary/minute-taker,
vice-chair, and discuss the plan of work going forward.
Those roles do not all have to be distinct individuals.
We'll review Mike Cowlishaw's errata list,

 http://speleotrove.com/misc/IEEE754-errata.html

but no technical decisions will be taken at this first meeting.

The doodle poll lists a number of possible dates in the period 16 Sep - 1 Oct,
and two times of day, noon (bring your lunch) or 7:30pm (bring your dinner).
These times are intended to avoid traveling too much at rush hour, to the
extent possible. The effects of economic recovery on Silicon Valley
traffic are remarkable.

I intend to meet in the Bay Area. I prefer face-to-face meetings with
means for remote participants to call in.
If you plan to call in, so indicate after your name.

My preference would be a university facility but the remote call in
facilities might not be available there.
Thanks again to economic recovery, however,
industrial meeting space tends to be in high demand during normal business
hours. So don't assume any more about the venue than "somewhere in the
Bay Area."
