We think that such a severe change of the language like introducing
different modes of floating-point arithmetic
should serve for more purposes than only gaining speed on some
architectures.

We therefore support Sam Figueroas comments to introduce 3 modes
strict, native and wide
with implementation dependant semantics for the latter 2

Furthermore directed roundings and the IEEE exceptions and all other
features of the IEEE standard shall be made available. We have done this
using the native code interface. The sources are available via email
inquiry (lerch or wolff a ...)

Another opportunity to speed up numerical computations in Java
would be to force matrices (or higher-dimensional arrays) to allocate
contiguous storage.
