Earl Killian requests references to Newton-Raphson algorithms for divide
and square root, with particular application to machines with fused
multiply/add instructions, like the IBM RS6000.
The reference to this work is the paper by Brett Olsson,
Robert Montoye, Peter Markstein, and MyHong NguyenPhu
entitled ``RISC System/6000 Floating-Point Unit'', pp. 34--42
(particularly p. 38), IBM RISC System/6000 Technology, IBM
Publication SA23-2619, First edition, 1990.
Copies should be available from any IBM branch office. A draft of the
second volume of this series is available via anonymous ftp from
ibminet.awdpa.ibm.com:/pub/rs6kpapers. I don't know whether the
first volume is also available electronically; perhaps the
editor of volume 2, steveahwperform.austin.ibm.com, could respond.
