The paper "Faster Numerical Algorithms via Exception Handling" by James
Demmel and Xiaoye Li discusses how IEEE style exception handling can
accelerate numerical codes, using examples drawn from LAPACK. The
paper is available by anonymous ftp from toe.cs.berkeley.edu in
directory pub/upload. The paper is in csd-93-728.ps (in postscript
format) and the associated software which can be used to measure
the speedup benefit of exception handling on your machine is in
csd-93-728.shar (as a UNIX shar file). I would be interested in
seeing any measurements you make on machines not already in the
paper (DEC 5000, DEC alpha, SUN 4, and a Cray C90).
