VS Aero and VS 1000 ... spend over half their time writing out answers

This is amazing.  Presumably the machines in questions
are supercomputers.  Presumably the data is not going to intermediate
temporary files; otherwise unformatted I/O would be used.
What happens to the reams of formatted output that these programs produce?
Even half a minute's time on any Cray is a lot of formatted output.
If it's being read by another computer, it's hard to see how anything
but a Cray could keep up - which suggests unformatted I/O again.
