SPRING WIND

The wind blew out of the south,
Mussing my hair, caressing my cheek and
Temptingly whispering, ôClimb over the hills
And see what lies beyond.ö
I never went to see
But I always wished I had.

OKLAHOMA CLAY

Red clay is stubborn.
It clings and sticks.
The Red ManÆs left it,
Endowed with all his obstinacy and persistence,
To remind us that
This land was always part of him and never
Can be really ours.

APRIL NIGHT

It is like a minor chord played softly and wistfully,
For all its lovely calm, it has a melancholy strain
That stirs a vague and long-forgotten yearning
For some strange, mad, new adventure
That I shall never have.

AUGUST DROUGHT

The creek is dry. Who would ever guess
That it can swell and overrun its banks
With cold, life giving floods?
It has no life. Here it is all
Hard red clay, can it be resurrected?
Yes, it will rain again.

The poetry selections of the last four days were written
by my wife Carol when she was a Freshman at OCW and 18 years old. Before
she was 19, we would be married and off to a different life, looking
over hills and vales we never expected to see. Love to
all, Grampa.
