After I wrote a few words about Cousin Chapman
Sullivan, Mize High School teacher, I was asked just who he
was. Well, he was the youngest son of Henderson Sullivan, son
of Loderick, and Ellen "Toodie" (Cole) Sullivan, daughter of
Jeptha Cole and "Old Puss" daughter of Henderson "Hense", son of
Pappy Tom. So he was my remote cousin through the Coles, and he
was cousin to some degree to every Sullivan descendant of Pappy
Tom. This particular Sullivan family was known as the
"preacher-teacher family," and several were natural musicians.
Some descendants my age became church artists. They lived on
the Smith side of the Simpson County line just north of my
Richardson grandparents. This story of Bellingrath Gardens was
sent to me by Chapman's nephew who shared similar views to mine.

I was not interested in the Army, or fighting. though I did
apply myself well enough to get some recognition through the
years. My interests were in forestry, horticulture, and the
remarkable beauty of our Sullivan's Hollow in dogwood season. I
got to the Gulf Coast for the first time in 1946, after I had
graduated from West Point. I only wanted to see Bellingrath
Gardens, which is near Mobile. I tried all one day to get there
by bus, without success. The buses still ran between military
bases, paying no heed to tourist attractions. So I never got to
see these scenes. I hope you can see and enjoy them.
