It was my maternal uncle, Thomas F. Richardson, who did the old post
offices of Smith County. I do not know
where he got the list. He was a WWI Marine who encountered some mustard
gas and
got a veteran's scholarship to Yale, then was a principal in New Haven,
and was eventually President of the CT Teacher's Association. When he
retired to MS, he and his wife did the first cemetery census and
inventory of Smith County, and his work is incorporated in the present
publications. I believe it was 1960 when he was the Census chief for
Southern Mississippi. He had a tung oil operation at Poplarville, but
his trees were wiped out by Hurricane Camille, and he sold out his
holdings to my younger brother Roland Hough and moved to SC. In spite
of the mustard gas, he lived a careful life and got to age 97, I
believe, and died while living with a grandson in New England.

While growing up, I heard of most of these defunct post offices.
Hardly anything better illustrates the futility of farming on land where
the topsoil quickly erodes when it is exposed. In Smith County
communities seldom lasted two generations. At
one time or another these postoffices were the centers of communities.
I suppose a history could be written for each. Note that Uncle Tom
Richardson originally prepared the list while he lived in SC. He did not
include all postmasters, but he seems to have selected those of interest
to him.
