The Galician newspaper, "Correo Gallego" has a picture gallery today of Queen Sofia of Spain arriving at Monte del Gozo yesterday. She walked accompanied by 300 (yup, three hundred) members of the Royal Guard, many of whom were riding horses. She wore an attire reminiscent of a girls scout uniform with long pants, and used a walking stick with a cross on its top and a small gourd. While she did not wear a backpack, she carried a large shoulder bag with her personal items which, reportedly, weighed six kilograms (about 14 pounds); the strap of the bag was very wide, to support the weight, one imagines.<BR>
Surprisingly, she did not wear a hat.<BR>
(I have never ceased to be amazed by the fact that despite the fact that the broiling sun may be coming straight down their faces, very few, if any, women in Spain wear hats).<BR>
The newspapers also report that the pilgrims office refused to grant a pilgrim the Compostela after he had traveled the last 300 kilometers of the Camino on a unicycle. The reason for the refusal was that he apparently had unicycled for exhibitionist, rather than pious, motives.<BR>
