all,
About 5,600 more pilgrims were
awarded the Compostela in 2003, (74,614), than in 2002
(68,952).
69,491 of the pilgrims
stated a religious motive for their pilgrimage and 5,123 declared an
educational/cultural reason.
Slightly
over 40% of the pilgrims were women and the rest were
men.
6,844 of the pilgrims were over
60 years old, 38,975 were between 30 and 60 years of age, 28,730 were under 30
years old and 65 declined to reveal their
age.
60,721 walked, 13,624 rode
bicycles, 266 rode horses and 3 went by wheel
chair.
Almost 60% of the pilgrims,
44,430, were from Spain. the rest, 30,184, came from other
countries.
The largest number of
foreign pilgrims, 5,967, hailed from Germany, followed by 5,157 from France,
4,210 form Italy, 1,658 from Portugal, 1,512 from the United States, 1,252
from Holland, 1,223 from the UK, 1,220 from Austria, 1,155 from Belgium 1,029
from our dear neighbor Canada, 1,003 from the Nordic countries (?), 999 from
Brasil and the rest, in diminishing numbers, from 83 different countries
including Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Palestine, Japan, Korea,
Moldavia, the Ukraine, China, Russia and many others that represented a
total of 95 foreign countries.
10,300
pilgrims commenced their pilgrimage in Sarria, 7,761 in Roncesvalles, 7,670 in
SJPP, 6,258 in O Cebreiro (including me!!), 5,485 in Leon, 5,442 in
Ponferrada, 4,805 in Astorga, 2,680 in Pamplona, 2,228 in Burgos, 2,183 in
Villafranca and the rest at various points all 100 or more qualifying
kilometers away from Santiago.
(Two of the three pilgrims on wheelchair came from Roncesvalles and one from
Sarria)
The favored route was the
French Way, followed by 65,829 pilgrims, followed by the Portuguese Way
with 3,612 pilgrims, the Northern Way with 3,068 pilgrims, the Silver Way with
1,845 pilgrims, the English Way with 260 pilgrims and the rest, in
smaller numbers, walked some of the other routes, including the Primitive
Way.

Again, these numbers represent only those pilgrims that requested,
and received the Compostela, not, in the least, all of the pilgrims that may
have been on the Camino during the year.

Warm
regards,

Rosina
