Does anyone know the source of the quotation "Patriotism is the refuge of scoundrels"? Lillian Hellman used the quote in her book "Scoundrel Time" which referred to her being investigated and questioned by the un-American Activities Congressional Committee in the fifties.
By the way, she also wrote that the "white man's burden" was a fraudulent and contrived doctrine to justify taking over other peoples' land and destiny.
At the advent of the Women's Liberation Movement in the seventies, the same doctrine, by then thoroughly discredited, was decried as another disguised attempt to continue to control women's lives.
Oh well!!
