On occasion it is still worth using a travel agency, especially one that specializes in student and faculty travel. While some of the cheap international fares on offer require one to have an academic affiliation, many do not, and given a school holiday schedule (May to August) you may well find there are cheap tickets available for your trip. One such agency with offices near most larger universities (and in many cities around the world as it is a large operation) is STA - Council Travel. I have used it to book last minute, complicated itinerary, and similar trips, and I got much lower fares than Expedia, Orbitz, specific airline sites or any other websites I consulted offered. At the moment they are offering summer-long round trips from Seattle to Paris or Madrid for well under $500, a fare that would usually be closer to $1000. As there is an office within walking distance of my home, I usually deal with them !
in person, but the organization also has a website: http://www.counciltravel.com
