For anyone who shares my love of medieval and early renaissance music, there is an immense musical heritage related to the Camino. The list below is but a tiny sample.

The Codex Calixtinus, a basic document for Camino studies is partially a song book, and there is a wonderful recording "Miracles of Sant'Iago" by the female group Anonymous 4 (Harmonia Mundi http://www.harmoniamundi.com) including many of those songs.

The various recordings of chant by the monks at Santo Domingo de Silos (about 100 km from the Camino and a popular side trip) were popular a few years ago and are still available from EMI. Such chants were the norm in medieval religious services and can still be heard in some of the churches along and near the Camino in special services today.

Naxos has published several recordings of pilgrim music from the middle ages and renaissance, and they are available inexpensively (http://www.naxos.com)

One of the most important musical documents from the renaissance is at the library of Las Huelgas, a monastery on the outskirts of Burgos (the Camino passes in front of it) and there are a number of excellent recordings of that music. In addition, any good recording (there are several of both manuscripts) of music from the Cantigas de Santa Maria or the Llibre Vermell will include music familiar to medieval pilgrims. When they have made recordings of that music, the Catalan groups (Hesperion XX, La Capella Real de Catalunya, etc.) with MontserratFigueras and led by the cellist Jordi Savall are the best ones I have encountered. Any of their recordings of medieval and renaissance music are well worth hearing.

While I am loath to recommend chain music stores, Virgin, Tower or the like have instore computers that are great ways to locate the music and the various available recordings. Simply type in "Santiago" "Codex Calixtinus" "Llibre Vermell" etc and you will retreive a list of recordings currently available.

In an entirely different musical vein, a local record store here (not a Tower or Virgin!) recently featured an album of some interest to those who like bagpipes and galician music by the Real Banda de Gaitas de la Escola Provincial de Gaitas de la Deputacion de Ourense, directed by Xose Lois Foxo, O Camino, RTVE Musica, 1999 (8-42322-620619 bar code number) (pardon the lack of accents as I am typing this in a hurry).
