Others will have more information, but my understanding is that the scallop
shell has long been a symbol of the Pilgrim going to Santiago. There are
legends on the origin of the tradition. They can be obtained at most of the
towns along the way. We actually bought ours in a bar. They are often attached
to one's pack or worn around the neck. Not an essential part of the Camino,
but it made us feel connected with the many who have gone before. Lydia<br>
