In 1998 I walked to Santiago from St. Jean, and last autumn I walked from Somport, and both routes are fine. If I were to walk the Camino again, however, I would again do the Somport route. The Camino Aragonese from Somport via Jaca to Sanguesa, Monreal and on to Puente la Reina (Navarra) where it joins the Camino Frances is a wonderful walk. It is uncrowded and scenic with good albergues. If you are interested in my detailed comments, I can email you a copy of my daylog for the route.

As to transportation, from Toulouse, take a train to Pau (3-4 hours), then a local train from Pau to Oloron Ste.Marie (about an hour). From the front of Oloron Gare, SNCF runs a bus to Somport (and on to Canfranc Estacion), taking about an hour and costing last autumn 75 FF. For train schedules http://www.sncf.fr (check on the union jack for the english language version). In the autumn there were 4 busses a day from Oloron to Canfranc (and vv). sEVERAL SMALL
