The way I did it I think is better. After arriving in Paris from the U.S. in the a.m., I took a flight to Bayonne/Biarritz, which was relatively inexpensive. I then took a local bus from the airport to the Bayonne train station, which was very inexpensive. That way I did not have to stay overnight to get to SJPP. The savings not having to stay in Biarritz or Bayonne offset the cost of the Air France flight vs. the train trip cost. Also the short air trip was less tiring than the long train trip.
