While 25 km is not a bad distance for a day on the Camino, probably about average for most pilgrims over age 25, it is rarely necessary to walk that far from refugio(=albergue) to refugio. Except on the lightly travelled route from Somport to Puente la Reina, refugios are usually not much more than 10-15 km apart. The closer one gets to Santiago, the closer, on average, albergues are to each other. In Galicia they are about 10 kms apart, closer in stretches where private facilities supplement the ones funded by the Xunta de Galicia. In October I met more than a few peregrinos who planned to take well over a month for the trek from Roncesvalles and were walking not much more than 10-15 km per day.

E. O. Pederson
