<P>I wore low top lug soled Eccos from St. Jean to Roncesvalles and onward and was happy with them. Crossing the Pyrenees is a bit daunting for the first day on the camino, especially the climbing, but in most places the route is fairly easy and smooth. The only really rough bit is the last km or so down to into Roncesvalles where the trail is steep, muddy, and a little slippery. I walked in Sept-Oct, and the camino was often muddy (very muddy in some areas), especially between Roncesvalles and Pamplona and later near Estella. In the muddy conditions, high top shoes would have been a little better, and if I am lucky enough to do the pilgrimage again, I will use high top shoes.
