The Missing Peregrina

I spent years in a law enforcement environment, an entire culture of black and white, cause and effect, connect the dots. The observation of human behavior simply became second nature. As anticipated, the now-named suspect Miguel Ángel Muñoz Blas didn’t go to just another small town in Spain, he went to another small town on the Camino. Why not go to Malaga, Marbella or Benidorm? There’s no shortage of partially dressed women on the beach after all. He was a doer, not a viewer. This was a predator that even changed the Camino markers to bring Pilgrims closer to his lair. Neighbors have stopped giving statements because they fear what he’ll do when he’s released. That’s right, released. This is small town Spain, where everyone knows everything about everyone. He was doing the Camino Primitivo and apprehended in Grandas de Salime. His ATM transactions left an easy path to follow (most criminals are fairly dense), and he was registered at the Albergue San Salvador. Grandas de Salime is near a project of the Franco era, a huge reservoir constructed for water reserve and hydroelectric power. There are numerous abandoned workers’ quarters clustered near the dam, making a convenient zero-cost living option. Oh yes, with Pilgrims walking by your door. This was a serial offender, a career criminal, the guy that needed to be removed from society. How long will he be out of circulation? We’ll see. In the meanwhile, light a candle and say a prayer for Denise and her family. Que descansa en Paz.
