[Gocamino] [saintjames] Latest news, numbers and gossip from Santiago

Hi John,
I still have the leaflets about several exhibitions that I saw at the Pilgrims' Museum in various years before 1996. The last time I was there. for an Archicofradia lecture about a sixth century female pilgrim in the Holy Land, someone mentioned that the museum and its functions were so popular that they were moving to the building by the horses fountain where the Platerias square meets rua Villar.
The old site was rather small and narrow, but I thought it very much in keeping with the relative smallness of Santiago. But I suppose that the huge influx of pilgrims inevitably has altered the coziness and intimacy of that gorgeous city and its treasures.
So much the pity for those of us who loved it the way it was.
Anyway, thanks for the update.
Regards,
Rosina
ps. Are you going to Seville for Holy Week? Any news about our friends at the Miami bar?

Ah dear Rosina you are almost correct...but no clarification was needed. If you read the story you will see that the Museum was founded in 1951 but did not become permanent until 1996. It is soon to move to new premises and has for some time been called the Museum of Pilgrimages or Museo das Peregrinaciones . Have a look here to learn all about it:

For those interested in seeing more of the Santiago market which Rosina mentions have a look here:

Very best wishes

> There has been a "Museum of Pilgrimages" (Museo de Peregrinos) for many years in Santiago...... and absolutely fascinating too. Perhaps the message means to convey that the Museum has been moved from its erstwhile site, on a street upwards from Azabacheria square to more ample headquarters.
> It should also e mentioned that in Santiago, a few blocks from the Cathedral, beyond the also fantastic open-air groceries, fish and market market (recently, by the way, highlighted in a New York Times article about Santiago) is the museum of the Galician people, which is another awesome treasure.
> Over the years the museo de Peregrinos has presented many extraordinary exhibitions, with pieces borrowed from all over the world, related to pilgrimages as way back as the fourth and fifth centuries. The exhibitions of traditional and modern paintings and sculptures related to pilgrims and pilgrimages have also been profoundly impressive.
