Hello you all,
There will be a pilgrimage to Rome. headed by Santiago Archbishop Barrios, to thank Pope Benedict for his visit to Santiago last November. The pilgrimage is open to all that may be interested in going. It will be from June 21 to June 28. There will also be visits to Assisi, Pisa, Siena, Florence, Ravena, Padua, Venice and Rome wherein the pilgrims will attend a private audience with the Pope.
Those of us who have attended the regular Papal audiences know that the attendees thereto constitute a multitude running into the thousands. A private audience, however, is limited to those composing a special group, and such audiences are quite rare.  I suppose that the privilege is being extended to the pilgrims from Santiago because of the Cathedral's special status as the sepulcher of the Apostle Saint James and because the pilgrims will be accompanied by Archbishop Barrios.
-On a related note, if you find yourself in Rome and would like to attend one of the general audiences (held on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m.), you can do so by going to Saint Peter's before hand, follow the right hand colonnade to its end and go up the stairs on the right (where the Swiss guards stand) and get tickets.  On the day of the audience you will need to get there at least an hour earlier to go through the check points and get a good seat.  The audiences are extremely interesting and, yes, moving, since people come from all over the world, with their banners and regional dress. As they are recognized they stand and sing or make music.  It is quite lovely.
For centuries people have written that in Rome all your troubles are cut in half. I've always found it to be so. I've also found the small restaurants on the side small streets  around Saint Peter's to offer some of the best food in Rome.... which is saying a very great deal.

If you are interested in joining the pilgrimage you can send an e-mail to  cataquese at planalfa.es   or call the agency making the arrangements: Agencia Nautalia  Tlf.- 981.10.81.42

Hugs!
