Rebekah is correct; permethrin is very toxic to cats, and to fish.  Cats have
died from getting flea treatments with permethrin as an ingredient.  I suspect
that using a treated sleeping bag liner, however, would not expose cats in an
albergue to any danger, unless the cat curled up next to you at night.  By the
way, the spray bottles of permethrin caution users to use it only outdoors, and
to avoid inhaling the spray.  It is a neurotoxin, although apparently not
well-absorbed by human skin.

DO NOT use this permethrin stuff anywhere near a cat. It is poisonous to them.
We keep a fine cat, and we bar any pilgrim who insists on spraying this stuff
around the house. We love pilgrims, but if you poison our Murphy Cat we will not
be so fond of you. Be sure to ask before you start squirting chemicals around
albergues. You are not the only creature who stays there.

There is a synthetic form of pyrethrim called permethrin; it's available in the
US in spray form, manufactured by Sawyer, and sold at sporting goods stores.  In

the northeast hikers use it to spray boots, socks and pantlegs as protection
against ticks.  There is also a permethrin-treated sleeping bag liner available
at the US store REI, and also a line of permethrin-treated clothing for hikers
made by a company called Buzz Off.  Permethrin should be not be applied directly

to skin, but can be used on clothing which touches skin.  Treated fabrics can go

through multiple washings.  None of this information will help any of you
currently dealing with bug issues on the Camino, but might be of interest for
future pilgrims.

Just a comment...  pyrethrum is the same ingredient used to kill head lice. It´s

the ative ingredient in RID and similar products.  I´m not advocating using lice

products for bedbugs, but would advocate further research into pros and cons of
its use for that purpose.

I´m still in Spain right now and won´t be home for 3 more days.

Hi,
This is re bed bugs in general and not the problems of a particular
albergue.  A small French company has developed a spray which seem to be
very effective against the little horrors it's also a non man made
pesticide being based on pyrethrum which is found in nature in
chrysanthemums.  The only problem is that at this moment their web site
is only in French Clako <http://www.clako-punaises.com/fr/accueil> but
if you persist you will find this page on the site list of retailers
<https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Amzw1kWlZ1_kdFlEU0NGYTBIUWV4ejV0d2NuVDdhRXc&hl=fr#gid=0>

which is a google spreadsheet listing all of the retailers who are
mainly to be found on the Chemin between Le Puy and St Jean Pied de Port
with quite a few in St Jean itself.
I hope this helps.
